Hand-painted icons by the sisters of the Monastery

The new Embroidery

The order for Sarov and Diveevo required the participation of the sisters from the sewing workshop as well as those who work in embroidery. The former made several dozen sets of priestly vestments and sticharia, while the latter designed and produced embroidery for liturgical aers and chalice covers. The large size of the aers (50 by 70 cm.) made it possible to work through the entire color spectrum in the icons embroidered on them. For example, up to fifteen colors were used in embroidering the faces on the icons, and in the clothing the emphasis was placed on color resolution: folds, shadows and highlights were worked out in full. Even the monochromatic parts of the icons were embroidered with a variety of styles and textures. In all, for each icon over sixty different shades of thread were used. The icon of the Placing in the Tomb was embroidered on white velvet, while the icon of the Holy Trinity was embroidered on green velvet. The icons for the embroidery were designed by sisters from the icon-painting studio, who gave constant help and advice to the sisters of the sewing workshop as they worked to complete the order.
